HHS Receives 2023 CSAC Challenge Award for disaster preparedness training

Yuba County, CA - Yuba County Health & Human Services’ multi-agency emergency response shelter exercise earned the prestigious Challenge Award from the California State Association of Counties.

After recognizing a need for hands-on disaster preparedness training, Ben Martin, the Disaster Response Coordinator, and his team began paving the way for a more strategic approach. Over the course of the summer, staff attended multiple trainings which provided the framework for a joint exercise. In simulating an activation of an emergency response shelter, employees collaborated to assemble cots, practice evacuee registration, and activate a med/health station. By bringing everyone together in a no-fault environment staff left feeling confident and capable should a real emergency occur.

What started as a small work group turned into a joint effort between Yuba County Health and Human Services, the Salvation Army, Yuba County Office of Emergency Services and many other local organizations.

“Thank you to all the amazing employees at Yuba County HHSD for your ongoing support of the residents of Yuba County, especially during disasters when our residents need us most,” said Ben Martin. “Your dedication reflects in our vision to support a healthy and thriving community.”

“All counties applaud Yuba County Health and Human Services for your innovation and dedication,” said Graham Knaus, CEO of CSAC. “Congratulations on winning a prestigious 2023 Challenge Award.”
